In ancient Greek mythology, the origin of amethyst is linked to Dionysus, the god of wine. According to the legend, Dionysus fell in love with a young woman named Amethystos, but she rejected his advances. To escape Dionysus, Amethystos prayed to the gods to remain pure. In response to her plea, Artemis turned her into a pure white stone.

Angry that he could not have her, Dionysus poured his wine over the white stone, dyeing it a beautiful purple color. This is how amethyst came to be. Because of this story, amethyst was believed in ancient Greece to prevent intoxication, and people would even drink from amethyst cups in the hopes of staying sober.
